Interior design has always been impacted by fashion trends - both historically and in the modern day. In this article series, "Designing in Style," I explore the meaning of style for interior designers. I draw on my experience working alongside many of London's best-known interior design teams.
This third article in my series continues my discussion of traditional/period design, with a focus on the Georgian style.
In terms of dates, the Georgian period is generally considered to have extended from 1714 until 1830. It has since inspired one of the most popular traditional interior design schemes.
London design was considered world-class in Georgian times - UK craftspeople were highly skilled and uniquely specialised. The wealthiest classes insisted on the highest quality, with exacting standards in terms of dimensions and proportions.
A few designers were particularly famous during the Georgian era. Their names, ideas and concepts live on today in the many homes and residences that feature Georgian-inspired interior designs.
William Kent lived from 1684 until 1748 and was an architect/interior designer who is best known for his tables and chairs which featured extravagant gilt decorations and strong connections to Greek and Roman insignia. Today these traditional designs continue to be used by many London Interior Design Consultancies that specialise in the Georgian style.
Thomas Chippendale is a name famous to many discerning Londoners. This cabinet-maker lived from 1718 until 1779 and designed furniture that was less ostentatious than that of William Kent, consistent with British (and London) tastes at the time, and yet exceedingly graceful and refined. Interior designers today will adopt either Chippendale's original designs or re-envisionments/replicas of his originals.
Finally, Robert Adam was an architect and interior designer who dominated the 1770s with his vivacious use of Roman and Greek motifs, including urns, tripods, and mythological iconography.
Today, London interior design consultancies tend to be cautious with Georgian designs, recognising that this style can look pretentious if too pronounced. Larger, more spacious London mansions with tall ceilings are best suited to the Georgian style of interior design.
The next article in my series "Designing in Style" moves away from historic traditions and focuses in on a timeless interior design classic - the rural countryside.

QUESTION:
Contractor question-bathrooms being redone?
I am having my two bathrooms redone. The downstairs is a sink&toilet
upstairs-full bath/shower-Both are small(live in townhouse)
They started on Monday-the downstairs is tiled, painted, toilet in-THAT'S IT-no light fixture at all, upstairs tile is out except for a small piece, tub is in but not ready at all-they put the walls up and that is. Sink/vanity is still in-toilet out
Am I wrong in thinking more should have been done? Should the downstairs have a light in it?
I am not home when they do it-I go to work-I am leaving early today
Thanks for any input..-
ANSWER:
you should have told the contractors, you needed a light in the bottom bathroom before they started. but a light can be installed any time, if the one installing the light knows what they are doing, even thought the walls are already up and painted. you can leave a note or call your contractor.

QUESTION:
Should I hire a contractor for this?
Okay, I am days away from closing on my new house. The house was built in 1992 and is in sound condition but the there is some updating to be done. A list of what I want done can be found below...Kitchen:
New cabinets, Counters, Back-splash, fixtures and Appliances.Baths:
Not much just new vanity's and tops for 2 bathsPool:
Install Heat PumpAdditional things:
New Carpet in 3 bedrooms on the second level and the stairs (750 SF), paint for the entire inside of the house, tear out of in the wall intercom system w/drywall repair (4 units) and lastly the Replacement of 7 light fixtures.I don't want anything over the top and the house is only 1500 SF. I have done a lot of pricing at Lowe's, Home Depot, Express Flooring and a few local paining company's. I have planned to spend about ,000 for all these projects but am starting to get overwhelmed with the details and not exactly sure where to start, I need to move into the house before March 1st but want all this work done first.
So my question is, should I use the install services of the multiple company's that I have already priced or just hire a General Contractor?
Thanks in advance!!!
P.S No, I have not paid for, ordered or settled on any exact materials for these projects yet.
The ,000 I have calculated includes the cost of all materials I have priced and each company's labor/install charges. Those numbers came to ,000 I am bugeting 00 over for any last miniute things.-

QUESTION:
I need help decorating/remodeling my bathroom?
My home is a 1035 square foot 2 BR 2 bath condo. My style is pretty traditional. My main bathroom is off the hall, one door away from the living room and would serve the second bedroom (although I currently use that bedroom as a media room) and as a powder room for visitors (not overnight guests). It is a full bath 5' x 8' with no windows. The tub is along the 5' east wall leaving 5 x 5. The entrance door is on the 5' west wall almost all the way to the south. Along the north wall from the west corner is a 36 inch vanity (black with a faux marble one piece sink and top - white with a slight grey cast) then the stool sits between the vanity and the tub. Above the vanity is a 22x28 inch mirror with a plain black frame. It is hung with the long sides on the verticle.
I need to tile the floor and tile around the tub. I want to keep the vanity and the white sink, stool and tub. When I redo the tub area I could convert it to a tub/shower but am not sure it's necessary. I have a light fixture box directly above the vanity mirror and wonder what I should do for lighting. I am willing to move the electrical box(es).
I want advice on floor tile type, size and color and the tub surround.
Also with the tub surround if I add a shower how high should I take the tile? If I add a shower should I get a shower door or curtains?
How high if I don't add the shower?
I could also use advice on paint color. All trim throughout the condo is white. The living room and hall are a blue green (it's close to Sherman Williams 6757 Tame Teal - http://www.sherwin.com/visualizer/ ). The kitchen (farther away) is chamois. I like the chamois more than the blue/green. The hall, living room and kitchen floors are Pergo natural maple.
Thanks!

ANSWER:
Biggest thing if your not redoing the whole thing is dont try to match colors, you will never get them perfect and it will look stupid, just put in colors that go together. Use track lighting and maybe add a soffit over the tub and put can lighting in there, I did that in bathroom and it looks great especially when those are the only lights in the bathroom on, it mades the shadows look very interesting.

I did ask for the downstairs 1st-3times!~-
ANSWER:
Think about the size of the working space, can more than one trade work in there at a time? And things must proceed in a logical order. Tile laid cannot be trod upon, or should not be, for at least 24 hours, and then there is the grouting, sealing that takes 48 hours. Even though there are 2 baths, you have to take this into consideration. My question is, why did you do both at the same time? Construction. remodeling just doesn't happen as fast as we would like.

QUESTION:
What color should I paint my bathroom?
I want to paint my master bath in my new(to me) condo, I got the ugly Wallpaper off and the walls were painted this awful yellow color prior. Its a pretty small bathroom, no window. Just a one sink vanity, shower/tub, commode. I'm getting rid the nasty faux gold colored fixtures and replacing them silver(towel rack, tp paper holder, light). The Floor is vynal flooring that's white with a neutral colored pattern. Since I'm doing this on kind of a shoe string budget I was thinking about just painting it white and doing a couple little things for now until I decided to totally re-do it someday but I kinda think that would weird. We painted the rest of the place in Neutral colors. Its a 2br 1.5 bath condo.

ANSWER:
Many times I have painted half-baths, usually used for guest baths... in deeper colors.
Brick red, deep fern green, dark mocha brown.
The deep colors always look nice, make the bathroom dramatic yet cozy.
If you like a certain accent color in your home, you could use that for the walls in this small bathroom.
Paint over the existing paint with a primer tinted to 1/4 the new color.
For instance, if you chose a deep mocha, you would get the primer tinted in that color only ask the paint department to use 1/4 the tint.
This way, your deep color will cover very well.
I always use eggshell or satin in bathrooms. And always latex(water-base)
Olympic makes a very nice low odor 0 VOC paint, about . a gallon.
